On Monday, hosts of the Charlie Kirk Show openly criticized former President Donald Trump following his harsh remarks directed at liberal filmmaker Rob Reiner.
The tragic discovery of director Rob Reiner and his wife Michele’s bodies, both with stab wounds, was made by their daughter at their $13.5 million Los Angeles residence on Sunday.
During Monday’s broadcast, hosts Andrew Kolvet and Blake Neff expressed their condolences to the Reiner family and the victims before addressing a controversial post made by Trump on his social media platform, Truth Social, earlier that day.
“It was the elephant in the room that needed addressing,” Neff commented. “Unfortunately, President Trump posted on Truth Social this morning.”
In his post, Trump referred to Rob Reiner as “once a very talented movie director and comedy star” and suggested that Reiner’s death was linked to the “anger he caused others” due to what Trump described as a “mind-crippling disease” known as Trump Derangement Syndrome, or TDS.
The term is used by conservatives to describe disdain for the Republican President.
After reading a portion of the president’s post out on-air, the pair quickly noted how they believed Trump’s comments had crossed a line.
Kolvet said the president’s language was ill-advised and distracting, even while acknowledging Reiner’s outspoken criticism of Trump over the years.
‘I’ll be frank. I think the president should delete that,’ Kolvet said of the Truth Social post.

Co-host Blake Neff was even more blunt in his assessment, warning how Trump’s rhetoric could alienate his supporters and hand critics unnecessary ammunition.
‘It’s terrible politics,’ Neff said. ‘It’s a free country. And he [Reiner] was allowed to believe what he wanted. That doesn’t mean it’s okay for him to get stabbed to death by his son. And it’s disgusting if anyone is celebrating this.’
Kolvet noted how Reiner even responded to Charlie Kirk’s death earlier this year, stating ‘it should never happen to anybody.’
The host agreed with Reiner’s words, saying that regardless of political disagreements, there is a basic standard for how public figures should respond.
‘I don’t care what your political beliefs are,’ Reiner said in a September interview following Kirk’s killing. ‘That’s not acceptable.’
‘That is the only correct response … whenever anyone dies,’ Kolvet said, emphasizing that political disputes should not override basic decency.
The pair referred to Reiner as a ‘sharp left-winger’, who ‘gave into TDS and Trump derangement’ but also acknowledged: ‘My heart goes out to their family. The guy had incredible depth,’ Kolvet said.
The criticism from The Charlie Kirk Show came as Trump doubled down on his remarks when questioned by a reporter in the Oval Office. Asked whether he stood by his comments, the president showed no sign of retreat.
‘Well, I wasn’t a fan of his at all. He was a deranged person,’ Trump said. ‘I think he hurt himself, career-wise, he became like a deranged person, [with] Trump derangement syndrome. So I was not a fan of Rob Reiner at all, in any way shape or form. I thought he was very bad for our country.’

Trump also accused Reiner of promoting what he called the ‘Russia hoax,’ referring to allegations during Trump’s first term that he was compromised by the Kremlin.
Reiner, 78, has long been one of Trump’s most vocal critics in Hollywood, frequently backing Democratic candidates and liberal causes. He has repeatedly described Trump as ‘mentally unfit’ for office and warned that he views the former president as an authoritarian threat.
‘Donald Trump is the single most unqualified human being to ever assume the presidency of the United States,’ Reiner told Variety in a 2017 interview.
The president’s harsh remarks about the director’s death also raised alarm among members of his own political party.
Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene, reacting to Trump’s statement, said: ‘Rob Reiner and his wife were tragically killed at the hands of their own son, who reportedly had drug addiction and other issues, and their remaining children are left in serious mourning and heartbreak.
‘This is a family tragedy, not about politics or political enemies. Many families deal with a family member with drug addiction and mental health issues. It’s incredibly difficult and should be met with empathy, especially when it ends in murder.’
Conservative pundit Robbie Starbuck wrote: ‘I don’t care what their politics were or how they felt about Trump, no law-abiding human deserves this. We should pray for + send condolences to his loved ones and NOT make it political.’

Republican adviser Roger Stone posted ‘RIP’ and noted how former president Richard Nixon used to rail against the liberal ‘hippie’ played by Reiner on the show All In The Family.
The Reiners’ daughter, Romy, 28, who lives across the street, is said to have discovered her parents’ bodies when she visited their sprawling six-bedroom estate yesterday.
Her brother Nick, a screenwriter who has spoken about his struggles with drug addiction and bouts of homelessness, is being questioned by detectives.
Their sibling, Jake, 34, is a former news reporter in Houston, Texas, and now writes screenplays.
Reiner also adopted a daughter, Tracy, with his ex-wife Penny Marshall.
Top Democrats, including former presidential nominee Kamala Harris, California Governor Gavin Newsom and former House speaker Nancy Pelosi, have shared their condolences.
The deaths come months after Reiner reportedly erupted at a Los Angeles watch party in the wake of former president Joe Biden’s disastrous debate against Trump that America could face ‘losing our democracy’ as a result of the mismanagement of the election campaign.
Newsom led condolences on Sunday night, writing: ‘Jen and I are heartbroken by the tragic loss of Rob Reiner and Michele Singer Reiner.’
He went on to describe the world-renowned director as ‘the big-hearted genius behind so many of the classic stories we love.’
He added: ‘His boundless empathy made his stories timeless, teaching generations how to see goodness and righteousness in others – and encouraging us to dream bigger.’
Newsom praised his ongoing advocacy for ‘children and civil rights’, highlighting some of the causes he was most passionate about.
‘From taking on Big Tobacco, fighting for marriage equality to serving as a powerful voice in early education, he made California a better place through his good works.’
‘He was known to have driven people CRAZY by his raging obsession of President Donald J Trump, with his obvious paranoia reaching new heights as the Trump Administration surpassed all goals and expectations of greatness,’ Trump posted about Reiner

He said Reiner ‘will be remembered for his remarkable filmography and for his extraordinary contribution to humanity’.
Pelosi, meanwhile, said the ‘news of a deadly assault on Rob and Michele Reiner is devastating’.
‘It’s hard to think of anyone more remarkable and excellent in every field and endeavor they pursued,’ she said, calling the talented director ‘creative, funny and beloved’.
‘And in all of their endeavors, Michele was his indispensable partner, intellectual resource and a loving wife.’
‘Personally, Rob cared deeply about people and demonstrated that in his civic activities,’ Pelosi said, calling him a ‘champion for the First Amendment and the creative rights of artists’.
‘And professionally, he was an iconic figure in film who made us laugh, cry and think with the movies he created.’
She finished her remarks by saying she, her husband, and ‘our entire family mourn the loss of our very dear friends and are praying for their loved ones during an unimaginable time of grief.’
Former vice-president Harris paid tribute as well.
‘Rob Reiner’s work has impacted generations of Americans. The characters, dialogue, and visuals he brought to life in film and television are woven throughout our culture. Rob loved our country, cared deeply about the future of our nation, and fought for America’s democracy,’ she wrote on X.
‘Rob and his wife, Michele, loved each other very much. They were dear friends, and Doug and I are devastated to learn of their passing. Our thoughts are with their loved ones during this tragic time.’
