Trump eulogy: Charlie Kirk's message will endure

() President Trump on Sunday delivered the final speech honoring Charlie Kirk at the conservative activist’s memorial service, saying the 31-year-old whose life was cut short Sept. 10 will live on in American politics.

Trump’s more than 40-minute speech was equal parts an admiring eulogy for the co-founder of Turning Point USA and a political message, with Trump criticizing the left for trying to silence the values his young confidant stood for. Kirk, co-founder of Turning Point USA, was fatally shot as he was making an appearance at Utah Valley University in Orem, Utah, in part to debate students with different political views.

“The gun was pointed at him, but the bullet was aimed at all of us,” Trump told an appreciative crowd at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona. “Indeed, Charlie was killed for expressing the very ideas that virtually everyone in this arena and most other places throughout our country deeply believed in.

“But the assassin failed in his quest because Charlie’s message has not been silenced. It now is bigger and better and stronger than ever before, and it’s not even close.”

Tyler Robinson, 22, has been charged in Kirk’s death, which Utah Gov. Spencer Cox has called a political assassination.

Trump: Charlie Kirk was a ‘martyr’

Trump heaped praise on Kirk, a Chicago area native who built a movement that attracted young people to conservative values. The president joked that while Kirk was known for wading into debate forums and extending a friendly hand, he prefers a more combative strategy.

Like Trump, Sunday’s speakers highlighted Kirk’s faith and his traditional values, which included encouraging young people to start families. Erika Kirk will lead Turning Point USA as its CEO and chair.

The president predicted Kirk’s influence will not wane.

“He’s a martyr now for American freedom,” Trump said. “None of us will ever forget Charlie Kirk, and neither, now, will history.”
