CHICAGO (WLS) — E-bikes and e-scooters have become increasingly popular for quick transportation, especially among young teens, but questions over safety have led some cities to approve new regulations.

In the city of Chicago, e-scooter and e-bike sharing programs are popular, and some people are buying their own. Chicago requires riders to be at least 18, or 16 years old with guardian consent, and you’re not allowed to ride them on sidewalks.

The villages of Hinsdale, Glen Ellyn and Lombard all require e-scooter riders to be at least 18 years old, and users can only ride motorized devices on the road. The village of Schaumburg requires riders to be at least 16 years old.

In Naperville, riders must be 16 or older to ride a Class 3 e-bike, which can reach 28 miles per hour. Naperville also prohibits riding e-bikes on public sidewalks.

In Burr Ridge, there are new e-bike and scooter guidelines. The village has completely banned e-scooters for everyone, while only permitting e-bikes on village roadways but not sidewalks.

Both Elk Grove Village and Highland Park require electric bike and scooter riders to have a valid driver’s license to ride on the street and to obey traffic laws. E-scooter riders in Highland Park must be over 18 years old.

And in Park Ridge, new regulations require riders to be a minimum age of 14. Those found violating the rules could face citations or potentially be arrested, depending on where they are caught.

So, when on an e-scooter or e-bike, be aware of new restrictions. Remember, it all depends on where you’re riding.
