CHICAGO () The Chicago judge who had previously issued a temporary restraining order in October to limit the use of non-lethal force by federal immigration officers against journalists, protesters, and clergy, is set to evaluate arguments on Wednesday regarding the possibility of making that order permanent.
U.S. District Judge Sara Ellis announced on Tuesday that she intends to decide on a request for a preliminary injunction within two weeks of a hearing that commenced on Wednesday at a federal court in Chicago. On Tuesday, Judge Ellis requested that attorneys for both the federal government and a coalition of journalism organizations, media outlets, protesters, and clergy agree to extend the temporary restraining order, originally issued on October 9, until November 19.
However, lawyers representing the Department of Justice indicated to Judge Ellis that they do not anticipate their superiors will authorize such an extension, setting the stage for an intensive day of legal proceedings on Wednesday.
