In a show of support, Mayor Brandon Johnson officially declared October 19 as Love Your Lungs Day. This proclamation underscores the critical importance of lung health and aligns with CHEST’s dedication to advocacy, health education, and innovation in the medical field.
Dr. John Howington, President of CHEST, shared insights with ABC7 about the conference’s significance. He emphasized the necessity of increasing public awareness about lung health.
“It’s significant that Chicago has designated today as Love Your Lungs Day to highlight lung health awareness. Lung cancer remains the leading cause of cancer deaths among both men and women, and COPD is the third leading cause of death in the U.S. It’s essential for everyone to be conscious of lung health, focus on caring for their lungs, avoid smoking, steer clear of pollution, and maintain regular exercise,” Dr. Howington stated.
In a statement, Johnson said, “By shining a spotlight on respiratory health, Chicago stands alongside CHEST and raising awareness, promoting equity and supporting healthcare providers and their patients.”
