The suspension of TSA PreCheck and Global Entry services is part of the ongoing effects of the partial government shutdown.

Although the Department of Homeland Security stated that the suspension was scheduled to begin at 5 a.m. local time, eyewitnesses from ABC7 observed travelers successfully passing through TSA PreCheck at 6 a.m. in Chicago.

With the suspension in effect at various airports, travelers will now have to navigate security alongside the general flying public, potentially resulting in longer wait times.

DHS staff will be redirected to help the broader traveling public.

The partial government shutdown began Feb. 14, after lawmakers failed to reach a deal on funding for DHS following growing calls to change immigration operations.

Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem said in a statement that “shutdowns have serious real world consequences.” She also said that “TSA and CBP are prioritizing the general traveling population at our airports and ports of entry and suspending courtesy and special privilege escorts.”

The air travel announcement comes as more than 5,000 flights were canceled across the country due to a winter storm this weekend.

Airlines are moving planes out of the storm’s path so they are ready to go once airports reopen.

Cancellations and delays are expected through at least Wednesday due to the nor’easter.
