CHICAGO (WLS) — Authorities report that a suspect is in custody following the fatal incident involving an UberEats driver on the city’s West Side. The tragic event occurred on Monday, according to Chicago police.
The victim, 28-year-old Daniel Figueroa from Downers Grove, was discovered unresponsive early morning around 2 a.m. on the 5500 block of West Flournoy Street, close to Loretto Hospital, police indicated.

He was immediately transported to Mt. Sinai Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. While the exact cause of death remains undetermined, officials have now classified this case as a homicide investigation.
Figueroa’s girlfriend, Sandra Guerrero, shared her thoughts with ABC7, speaking from her family’s Joliet residence during a birthday celebration for her son.
The day, initially meant for joyful celebrations, has turned into a period of profound sorrow for the family.
“I shouldn’t have to picture my boyfriend like that,” said Guerrero. “Somebody who I wanted to marry.”
Guerrero last saw her boyfriend on Sunday night. He had just gotten off work from Amazon and planned to work extra hours for UberEats, but he never made it home.
“I didn’t get no talks or no call from him until his mom reached out to me at 7 in the morning saying, you know, he had passed away,” Guerrero said.
“Today, it’s my son’s birthday. We had the whole day planned out for him to spend it with him. And it, just, I can’t believe it right now,” Guerrero said.
Guerrero described Figueroa as a dedicated family man who treated her son like his own. He was a people person who loved to fish and, overall, loved to take care of others. She says he worked multiple jobs to help support their family.
“I’m confused. I’m lost. I’m sad. Like, I don’t know what to do,” Guerrero said.
Guerrero and her family want justice for Figueroa.
Uber and Loretto Hospital offered their condolences to Figueroa’s loved ones, saying they will cooperate with police.
Chicago police said Figueroa death is still under investigation.
Loretto Hospital issued a statement, saying, “We are aware of the tragic incident reported this morning involving an individual slain near our campus.
On behalf of Loretto Hospital, our prayers and condolences go out to the individual’s family and loved ones. Our focus remains on supporting the safety, health, and well-being of the community we serve during this difficult time.

Uber also issued a statement on the incident, saying, “We’re incredibly saddened by this tragic loss, and our thoughts are with their family and loved ones as they navigate this unimaginably difficult time. We’ve reached out to police and will assist them however we can.”
Authorities did not immediately provide further information.
