A police officer in Chicago fatally shot a man on Tuesday night during an investigation into a stolen vehicle on the city’s North Side, according to the Chicago Police Department.

The shooting took place around 10:25 p.m. on North Washtenaw Avenue in the 5700 block. Officers were responding to a report of a stolen car found parked and empty when a dark-colored sedan arrived at the scene, carrying two men and a woman.

Authorities stated that the two men exited the newly arrived sedan and attempted to enter the stolen vehicle just as officers approached them.

One of the men ran away on foot, while the other returned to the sedan. When officers ordered him to exit the vehicle, he refused, leading to a confrontation.

One man fled on foot while the other got back into a sedan, police said. After directing him to get out of the vehicle, police said the man refused and there was a struggle.

During the struggle, police said the man accelerated the car, dragging the officer. The officer fired their gun and struck the man in the head while the vehicle crashed into an unoccupied parked car, police said.

The wounded man was transported to Illinois Masonic Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

An officer suffered minor injuries and was transported to a hospital, police said.

A woman was taken into custody and two firearms were recovered at the scene, police said.

The Civilian Office of Police Accountability is investigating the shooting.
