Suspect with knife, Antonio Wallace, charged after being by Chicago police officer on Madison Street in Austin, CPD says

CHICAGO (WLS) — A suspect wielding a knife is facing charges after he was shot by Chicago police officers in the Austin neighborhood Wednesday night, police said.

The incident took place at about 11 p.m. Wednesday in the 5200-block of West Madison Street.

Police said officers found a man armed with a large knife who was advancing toward civilians while walking in the street.

Police said the officers gave the suspect multiple verbal commands to drop the weapon. The suspect advanced toward officers, who used Tasers, which were ineffective, police said.

After the suspect continued toward the officers, an officer fired their gun and wounded the suspect, police said.

The suspect was then transported to a hospital in serious but good condition, police said. He has been identified as 55-year-old Antonio Wallace.

Wallace is facing multiple charges, including aggravated assault and possession of a weapon, CPD said.

The officers involved in the shooting will be placed on routine administrative duties for 30 days and the Civilian Office of Police Accountability is investigating.

The shooting came as police were also investigating a separate shooting involving an off-duty suburban officer shooting a suspect on the South Side.
