Fights among unsupervised teens at Brunswick’s “First Friday” events prompt police to increase presence next month.

BRUNSWICK, Ga. — Fights involving young people at the City of Brunswick’s “First Friday” event caused a response from the chief of police Saturday.

In a post on social media, Chief Angela Smith said unsupervised teenagers were fighting and running through crowds, causing a commotion.

“This behavior WILL NOT be tolerated! Parents/Guardians we plead with you to supervise your children and talk with them about their behavior in public spaces,” Smith said.

Smith added that there will be additional police presence to “deter such behavior” at the next First Friday event.

Smith’s full statement:

“This First Friday downtown and the First Friday in April we begin to notice an influx of unsupervised youth. During both occasions several teens begin to fight and cause a commotion running through crowds etc.. This behavior WILL NOT be tolerated! Parents/Guardians we plead with you to supervise your children and talk with them about their behavior in public spaces. The First Friday event; like many other events is designed to be a family oriented space for the public to come and enjoy being amongst the community we all call home. As a proactive approach, next First Friday will have an additional law enforcement presence to deter such behavior. Our community will be a safe place for residents, visitors and all to enjoy!”
