Child allegedly impregnated by stepfather had no protection: Journalist

() A digital journalist says an 11-year-old child who was allegedly forced to give birth to her stepfather’s baby wasn’t being protected by any adults.

“They were enabling Dustin (Walker) to be able to do what he was doing,” said Justin Shepherd, host of the podcast “Just in the Nick of Crime,” on “Banfield” in an appearance Tuesday. “There’s no way they didn’t know.”

Dustin and Cherie Walker of Oklahoma were arrested and charged last month after prosecutors found that a DNA test revealed Dustin was a match for the baby’s father.

“This case is really unsettling in a lot of different ways,” Shepherd added.

Child’s grandmother also charged with neglect

The child’s grandmother was also charged with six counts of child neglect in the incident.

Michelle Justus lived across the street from the family and was the child and her other siblings’ caretaker, according to prosecutors.

Court documents accuse Justus of failing to provide supervision and medical care for the children and allowing them to live in deplorable conditions. She also failed to report the pregnancy to the authorities.

“It seems like this child, all the children in the household, had no adults that were protecting them,” Shepherd said. “She didn’t handle the conditions of the house, which were squalid.”

Child was hemorrhaging when EMS arrived

Authorities said the child was hemorrhaging when emergency services personnel were called to the house. EMS decided to cut the umbilical cord and rushed the girl to a hospital.

“My best guess is that this got really bad, which makes sense because this is an 11-year-old child giving birth to a full-term baby,” Shepherd said.

The child and her five siblings were removed from the Walkers’ home.
