As the holiday season approaches, it’s essential to understand which key services will be available on December 24.
In an unexpected festive gesture, President Donald Trump has signed an executive order designating December 24 and December 26 as federal holidays for the year 2025. This means that the federal government will be closed on Christmas Eve, giving most federal workers an extended holiday break. Typically, Christmas Day is the only holiday on the federal calendar this week, so these additional days off come as a welcome surprise for many.
It’s important to note that this executive order applies solely to 2025 and does not permanently add these dates to the list of federal holidays. While most federal employees will enjoy these extra days off, there are exceptions. Those working in roles critical to national security, defense, or other essential public services may still be required to report to work.
Despite these federal closures, the United States Postal Service will continue its operations as usual on Wednesday, December 24, ensuring that mail and packages are delivered on time during the bustling holiday season.
Is the post office open on Christmas Eve?
The United States Postal Service will maintain normal operations on Wednesday, Dec. 24.
Christmas Eve is not one of the holidays observed by USPS, so mail delivery will remain normal. Local post offices will be open, but remember to check for specific hours.
However, post offices will be closed on Christmas Day. Mail delivery will also pause on Thursday, Dec. 25.
Regular mail service will resume on Dec. 26.
Are UPS and FedEx open on Christmas Eve?
Both major private shipping companies will have limited services on Christmas Eve:
UPS: UPS pickup for Air and international Air services only if prearranged by December 18, 2025. No UPS Ground service pickup. UPS delivery for all services available, and stores will be open. UPS Express Critical service remains available every day of the year for urgent shipping needs.
FedEx: FedEx will have modified service on Christmas Eve, with FedEx Freight closed and FedEx stores opened on modified hours. FedEx Custom Critical service will continue to be available 24/7 for time-sensitive deliveries.
For both shipping companies, customers should check with their local stores for specific operating hours during the holiday weekend.
