Dajshon Asbell died Monday after the deputy-involved shooting, which began with deputies attempting to serve him with arrest warrants at his Keystone Heights home.

CLAY COUNTY, Fla. — A man who was shot by Clay County deputies following an hourslong standoff Friday has died from his injuries, the sheriff’s office announced Tuesday.

Dajshon Asbell died Monday at the hospital after the deputy-involved shooting, which began when deputies attempted to serve him with arrest warrants at his residence on Indian Trail in Keystone Heights.

Deputies said Asbell was wanted for violating his probation from a previous battery conviction and on charges of assault on a law enforcement officer and resisting an officer without violence. The charges stemmed from a run-in Asbell had with deputies days earlier, during which the sheriff’s office said he fled.

When deputies responded to Asbell’s residence Friday afternoon, the sheriff’s office said he barricaded himself inside a utility shed on the property.

Deputies with the Crisis Negotiations Team spent hours attempting to negotiate with Asbell, but the effort was unsuccessful.

The CCSO SWAT team then used tear gas to get Asbell to surrender; however, the sheriff’s office said he refused to exit the shed. Crews then removed the front door of the building using a tactical vehicle.

The sheriff’s office said Asbell then emerged from the shed holding an edged weapon and charged at deputies.

At least three deputies shot Asbell. Additional less-lethal rounds and a K-9 were also used as he continued to resist arrest, according to the sheriff’s office.

Deputies administered aid to Asbell before he was taken to UF Health Shands in Gainesville for treatment. He died days later.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement, in conjunction with the State Attorney’s Office, is investigating the shooting.
