In a dramatic demonstration of the United States’ hardline stance on illegal entry, the U.S. Coast Guard recently took decisive action to intercept a vessel attempting to smuggle 25 Chinese nationals into the country near Florida’s shores. This incident underscores the message that U.S. borders are firmly closed to unauthorized entry, whether by land or sea.
The confrontation unfolded on June 10, as reported by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to News Media. A boat, carrying the Chinese nationals, defied commands from the Coast Guard to halt its course just a mile south of Key Biscayne.
Initially, crews from the Coast Guard Station Miami Beach fired warning shots to compel the vessel to stop. When these measures were ignored, the Coast Guard resorted to “disabling fire” to bring the vessel to a standstill, DHS officials confirmed. Fortunately, no injuries occurred during the operation.
Subsequent to the vessel’s capture, the individuals aboard were taken into custody, claiming to be from China. Their apprehension took place after the boat was effectively disabled off Florida’s coast.
After the interception, the Chinese nationals were moved to the Coast Guard Cutter Margaret Norvell for processing. Authorities seized the boat, towing it to Station Miami Beach, where further actions were taken to address the situation.
Special agents from Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Homeland Security Investigations launched a criminal investigation into the attempted entry, with assistance from Customs and Border Protection Air and Marine Operations.

“This sends a clear message to illegal aliens attempting to enter the United States: don’t even think about it,” Bis told News Media. “By land or sea, our borders are CLOSED.”
Lt. Matthew Ross, commanding officer of Coast Guard Station Miami Beach, emphasized local, state and federal maritime law enforcement partners remain vigilant against unlawful migration ventures.

“Anyone considering one of these dangerous voyages should understand that they are risking their lives at sea and can expect to be interdicted and repatriated,” Ross said.
The enforcement action falls under Operation Vigilant Sentry, a layered approach by the Coast Guard and its partners to maintain a continuous presence across the Florida Straits, Caribbean Sea and surrounding waters to deter and prevent illegal maritime migration.
