A prominent Melbourne surgeon is under investigation over allegations he performed unnecessary or excessive surgeries on young women.
Over 100 women have come forward claiming they had reproductive tissue and sometimes organs removed by obstetrician and gynaecologist Dr Simon Gordon at The Epworth Hospital for severe endometriosis, despite little evidence they had the disease.

Last night’s episode of Four Corners brought to light serious allegations against Dr. Gordon, accusing him of conducting unnecessary surgeries. The report claims he removed ovaries and, in some cases, the uterus from female patients, even when pathology results showed minimal or no signs of endometriosis.

One former patient shared her story with 9News, revealing she underwent a hysterectomy, only to later find out it was not medically required.

“Honestly, I can’t find the words to describe it; it’s been incredibly stressful,” said Steph, reflecting on her ordeal.

Emily Hart, Principal Solicitor at Arnold Thomas and Becker, disclosed that the law firm has been in contact with over 150 of Dr. Gordon’s former patients.

Victorian Premier Jacinta Allan has confirmed that the allegations have been forwarded to the police and the state’s healthcare watchdog for further investigation.

“Performing unnecessary surgeries is a crime. That is why it needs to be investigated by Victoria Police,” Allan said.

“This matter has been referred to Victoria Police because Women deserve answers.”

Dr Gordon has denied any wrongdoing. He resigned late last year.

His former employer, the Epworth Hospital, confirmed it reported Gordon to the Australian medical watchdog, AHPRA, after “concerns were raised with senior management in October 2025”.

An independent external review of the private hospital’s clinical governance arrangements have also been commissioned.
