DENVER (KDVR) — Police in Englewood, Colorado, and the FBI are in hot pursuit after a 200-year-old portrait of the nation’s first president went missing from a storage unit.

Described as “Englewood’s National Treasure,” the historical painting of George Washington was stolen from a unit in the 3000 block of Santa Fe Drive in the middle of the night on Jan. 10. However, the family that owns it didn’t realize it had been stolen until Jan. 22.

Now, police have paired up with the FBI and are asking for the public’s help in finding the stolen portrait.

“It’s not often that we have historical artifacts or historical art pieces stolen from this city,” Crystal Essman with the Englewood Police Department said.

The portrait has been owned by the family for 50 years and was created in the early 1800s. It is approximately 24 inches by 30 inches.

Because the piece has a lot of historical significance, Essman said it is hard to estimate the value of it in dollars.

“It’s a family heirloom, and they just want it back,” she said.

Anyone with information about the missing portrait was asked to contact the Metro Denver Crime Stoppers at 720-913-7867. Tipsters can remain anonymous and could earn up to $2,000.
