Colorado Hero Reaches Milestone with 70th Gallon Blood Donation: 'It's a Good Thing

(COLORADO SPRINGS) A remarkable milestone was reached at the Vitalant donation center on Austin Bluffs Parkway in Colorado Springs, where a local man made his 560th blood donation.

Anthony Lopez, a dedicated donor for nearly six decades, first gave blood in Illinois back in 1966. On October 14, 2025, Lopez marked another significant achievement by donating his 70th gallon of blood, demonstrating his unwavering commitment over the years.

In an interview with FOX21 Photojournalist Jaiden Kelsey, Lopez encouraged others to consider donating. “If you have the time, you should definitely try to donate. It doesn’t take much out of your day, and it’s greatly appreciated by those in need. It’s a worthwhile endeavor,” he shared.

As October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Vitalant emphasizes the importance of donations, noting that breast cancer impacts one in eight women. Additionally, 25% of their blood supply supports various cancer patients, highlighting the critical role of donors like Lopez in aiding cancer treatments.

While donations from all blood types are needed and greatly appreciated, type O-negative blood is only found in 7% of the population, and acts as the universal blood used in emergencies. O-positive, on the other hand, can help anyone with a positive blood type.
