NEW YORK — Comcast has announced its decision to reorganize by dividing its operations into two independently listed corporations, separating NBCUniversal and Sky from its core business.
According to a statement released on Monday, Comcast’s board and executive team believe that as standalone companies, each entity will be better equipped to focus on its strategic goals, cultivate growth, and enhance long-term shareholder value independently.
NBCUniversal, a prominent player in the media and entertainment industry, boasts an impressive array of assets including Universal’s film and television studios, NBC and Telemundo channels, as well as Peacock and Bravo. Additionally, it will encompass Sky’s European media operations.

Headquartered in Philadelphia, Comcast will maintain its focus on providing internet services to both residential and commercial customers.
Within the new structure, Mike Cavanagh, co-CEO of Comcast, is set to lead NBCUniversal as CEO. Meanwhile, Michael Angelakis, former Chief Financial Officer of Comcast, will assume the role of CEO for the newly standalone Comcast, acting as a strategic advisor during the transition period.
Comcast Chairman and co-CEO Brian Roberts will continue to be actively involved in the leadership of Comcast and NBCUniversal, working in partnership with the CEOs of both companies.
“Comcast will continue to build on its leadership in connectivity, while NBCUniversal, together with Sky, will have the scale, brands, content and financial resources to compete as a premier global media and entertainment company,” Cavanagh said in a statement.
Once the transaction is complete, Comcast shareholders will own shares in both Comcast and NBCUniversal. The separation is expected to be completed in about a year. It still needs final approval from Comcast’s board and is subject to regulatory approvals.
Comcast expects to keep a stake of up to 19.9% ownership position in NBCUniversal for up to one year after the spinoff is complete.
In premarket trading, Comcast shares surged 24%.
