On Sunday, one running group will mark the annual Ahmaud Arbery Day, Feb. 23, with a 2.23-mile run along the Atlanta Beltline’s West End Trail.
ATLANTA — Sunday, Feb. 23 marks five years since the fatal shooting of Ahmaud Arbery, the Black man who was killed while jogging after being chased down by a white father and son in south Georgia.
Travis and George McMichael told police they grabbed guns and pursued Arbery in their pickup truck, as they believed he was responsible for break-ins in their neighborhood. William Bryan Jr., a neighbor of the McMichaels, filmed the shooting from his vehicle.
The McMichaels were not arrested until 74 days after the shooting, after video of the incident went viral.
The three men were convicted of the murder of Arbery on Nov, 24 2021 and sentenced to life in prison. On Feb. 22, 2022, a jury found them guilty of federal hate crimes, for violating Arbery’s civil rights and targeting him because he was Black. All three want a new trial.
On Sunday, the Ahmaud Arbery Foundation is inviting runners to the “Run With Maud Race” starting at the Lee + White Complex at 1000 Lee St. SW in Atlanta. The event is open to anyone and no registration fee is required, though participants are asked to register here. The South Fulton Running Partners group will support the event that begins at noon.
The annual Ahmaud Arbery Day has been designated by the Georgia Legislature each Feb. 23.
The run Sunday will travel with a 2.23-mile route along the Atlanta Beltline’s West End Trail.
