DENVER (KDVR) A Colorado paraprofessional is looking on the bright side after she lost two of her only modes of transportation in a little over a week — one to a drunk driver, the other to thieves.
Bliss Barela is a longtime paraprofessional at Cory Elementary School.
“I work for just the best school. I just love it there and they’re like family,” Barela said.
On March 9, Barela said she and her family were getting ready to leave for church and take her car, which was parked out in front of their apartment.
“Right outside my apartment building we just noticed that there was just damage to my vehicle,” Barela said.
Upon a closer look, and a talk with her insurance company, it was declared totaled. She filed a police report as well since it appeared someone hit it and took off. She said her car was fully covered by insurance, but because she still had to make payments on it, they were not going to be able to get a new car any time soon, do they decided to share her husband’s work truck.
“That was all we had. And so, we had that parked down in a secure garage, you know, you even need key access to get in, so we felt pretty confident that you know nothing scary would happen,” Barela said.
But, about nine days later, on the morning of March 18, their truck was no longer there.
“It just kind of sent us for a whirlwind,” Barela said. “Definitely like upsetting, emotional, just because you feel really defeated.”
They once again went through the process of filing a police report. However the truck did not have full insurance coverage, so they received a liability. With no vehicles and no means to get new ones for the time being, Barela turned to the only source of comfort she could.
“A lot of praying and just keeping my faith and you know just hoping for some miracle,” Barela said.
And eventually, she got the miracle she was praying for.
“God must’ve been listening,” she said. “He just sent all these people that wanted to help and just really, you know, blew me away.”
Lauren Machol, a parent of Denver Public Schools, started a fundraiser on March 20 for Barela and her family, which you can find here.
“Ms. Bliss is an amazing human being and an integral part of the Cory team,” Machol wrote in the GoFundMe. “Cory would be a very sad place without Ms. Bliss. The Cory community has started a GoFundMe to help Ms. Bliss and her family to either purchase a new car or get a rental car until they are able to purchase a new car.”
In three days, it garnered over $3,000.
“I wasn’t expecting to get any help from anyone. Everybody is all living their life and going through their own struggles,” Barela said. “I was just like truly, truly grateful for help.”
FOX31 has reached out to Denver police on the stolen truck and is waiting to hear back.
