In the wake of a devastating knee injury during UFC 329 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Conor McGregor expressed his despair on X, remarking that he is “beyond dark” and likening his situation to “hell.” The injury occurred on Saturday night, forever marking a sombre chapter in his fighting career.
During his much-anticipated return to the UFC, McGregor’s comeback was cut tragically short. On his initial attempt to kick in the octagon, an unexpected slip led to what seemed like a serious injury to his right leg. Just 69 seconds into the fight against Max Holloway, the match was abruptly halted.
In the early hours of Sunday, McGregor took to social media to reiterate the unforeseen nature of his injury. He revealed, “My head gasket is gone,” emphasizing that no prior injuries alluded to the ordeal. His disbelief was palpable as he recounted his rigorous preparation, kicking and jumping tirelessly both in his training camp and just before stepping onto the fight floor.
McGregor’s post occurred just over an hour after he bolted from T-Mobile Arena barefoot — and after declining a request from Paramount Plus for an interview — following his loss.
Dana White, the president and CEO of UFC, said they’re assuming that McGregor, 37 blew out his ACL, and McGregor’s post confirmed reporting from The Post’s Erich Richter that the injury didn’t occur before the fight — despite what speculation on social media, and a viral clip, suggested.
“If there was a preexisting injury somebody would have noticed,” White told reporters, according to The Athletic.
McGregor, whose bout — and return — served as the main event Saturday night, took five years before returning to the ring this time, and it’s unclear when, after this injury, his next fight might be.
