Watson was attempting to intervene in an altercation at Hubbard Inn, located in the River North area, when he was pushed down the stairs shortly after 1:15 a.m.

Initially, the Chicago Police Department reported that a suspect had been detained, and charges were anticipated. However, on Wednesday, they announced that no charges had been filed, and the individual has since been released.

The incident was initially reported when a woman called 911, claiming she had sustained injuries.

But police say a 32-year-old man was involved in an altercation with a group, and Watson tried to intervene. The 32-year-old then allegedly pushed Watson, causing him to fall down the stairs.

Police said Watson was taken to Northwestern Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Officers took the suspect into custody on the scene.

A spokesperson for the restaurant and bar issued a statement, saying, “The Hubbard Inn team is devastated by last night’s tragic incident and our hearts are with the family who lost their loved one. We can’t comment on the specifics as the work of CPD is ongoing, but we are closing our doors to the public for the next couple of days while giving staff time to grieve and provide access to mental health support to those who may need it.”

Hubbard Inn’s manager declined an interview but shared that they are trying to support their employees and assist with the investigation.

Police are conducting a homicide investigation.

Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle canceled a campaign event that was scheduled for Thursday at Hubbard Inn.

“Due to unforeseen circumstances and out of respect regarding a tragic incident at the venue, we have made the decision to cancel the event that was scheduled,” the campaign team said.

According to a recording reached when calling the business, Hubbard Inn is expected to reopen Thursday.
