(The Hill) – Plans for the theatrical release of a documentary on First Lady Melania Trump have been shelved in South Africa, as confirmed by a local distribution company.

The film, titled “Melania,” is set to premiere this Friday and delves into the events leading up to her husband’s pursuit of a second presidential term. Notably, Melania Trump served as an executive producer for the project.

Thobashan Govindarajulu, who heads sales and marketing at Filmfinity, explained the decision to The New York Times, stating, “Due to recent developments, we have decided against proceeding with a theatrical release in the region.”

The news of the documentary’s withdrawal was initially reported by News24, a prominent South African news outlet.

Back in November, President Trump announced that South Africa would be excluded from the invitation list for this year’s G20 summit in Miami, further straining relations between the two nations over accusations of discrimination against white farmers.

The president put out the decision on Truth Social when the 2025 Johannesburg-based G20 was ending. Trump said the U.S. didn’t attend that summit “because the South African Government refuses to acknowledge or address the horrific Human Right Abuses endured by Afrikaners, and other descendants of Dutch, French, and German settlers.”

“To put it more bluntly, they are killing white people, and randomly allowing their farms to be taken from them,” Trump alleged.

South African officials have rejected the Trump administration’s claims, saying there is no evidence of genocide or persecution of Afrikaners in the country.

Kennedy Center interim President Richard Grenell said earlier this month that “Melania” will premiere there Thursday. Both the president and first lady are slated to attend.

Amazon reportedly invested $40 million in the film, which critics have questioned.

The Hill has reached out to Amazon MGM Studios, the White House and Filmfinity for comment.
