The Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) has rolled out a revamped security strategy following warnings of potential funding cuts from the Trump administration. This move, aimed at bolstering safety across the city’s transit systems, comes amid increasing concerns about crime rates.
In line with these efforts, the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office has announced the formation of its own CTA Task Force. This initiative marks another step by local agencies collaborating to address and mitigate crime within the public transportation network.

Key to this task force is the deployment of 36 specially trained assistant state’s attorneys and investigators. Their mission is to enhance the prosecution of transit-related offenses, ensuring a more robust response to crime on the CTA.
Moreover, the State’s Attorney is instituting a “CTA Crime Pre-trial Release Conditions Protocol.” This new directive mandates that assistant state’s attorneys seek pre-trial detention for any violent crimes committed on public transit, underscoring a commitment to public safety and accountability.
If a defendant isn’t detained, those state’s attorneys will pursue court-ordered restrictions on that defendant’s access to public transit.
The new task force comes after a series of crimes on the CTA, most recently Wednesday morning when police said two people were stabbed on a CTA Red Line train.
The federal government had directed the city to better address crime.
The CTA and Chicago Police Department have also come up with their own plans.
