During an appearance on CNN’s “The Source” on Thursday, Senator Thom Tillis of North Carolina declared his firm stance against endorsing any attorney general nominee who downplays or excuses the Capitol riot of January 6, 2021.

In a conversation with host Kaitlan Collins, Tillis was asked about President Biden’s decision to dismiss Pam Bondi. Collins inquired, “Do you think the president made the right decision to fire Pam Bondi today?”

Senator Tillis expressed uncertainty regarding the president’s rationale, stating, “I’m not entirely sure what the basis was, as a potential new nominee might come before the Judiciary Committee. It’s a bit early for me to grasp the reasoning behind it. I had a positive working relationship with General Bondi. I’ve heard some reports suggesting presidential frustration over certain case pursuits. Personally, I disagree with some of those pursuits, like what I consider the unfounded case against Chair Powell. If that’s the root of the frustration, I must respectfully disagree with the president. However, if there are other reasons that haven’t yet surfaced, I’ll hold off on making a judgment.”

Tillis further emphasized his criteria for supporting a new nominee, stating, “For me, the disqualifying factor is if they make any statements that excuse the events of January 6. I have been unequivocal on this matter. Therefore, I hope the prospective candidate to succeed General Bondi understands my firm stance on January 6. It’s the reason I opposed two prior nominees at the Judiciary Committee, and I will not support any nominee who believes any part of January 6 is justifiable.”
