Over the last 25 years, the Rangers have had three general managers. Glen Sather led the team from 2000 to 2015, followed by Jeff Gorton from 2015 to 2021, and currently, Chris Drury has taken over in 2021. One interesting fact about these three GMs is that none of them have ever extended the contract of a forward they drafted for more than two years.
Defensemen, they’ve been kind of a different story with Marc Staal getting a five-year deal off entry level, Ryan McDonagh and Brady Skjei getting second contracts of six years and Adam Fox earning a seven-year extension.
But forwards? Ryan Callahan got two years on his second contract. Brandon Dubinsky got two years. Derek Stepan got two years. Chris Kreider got two years. Carl Hagelin got two years. Artem Anisimov got two years. Pavel Buchnevich got two years. Filip Chytil got two years. Kaapo Kakko and Alexis Lafrenière got two years apiece. J.T. Miller got one.
One bridge after another.
