Darren Mougey reveals stance for major decisions on Jets trio

According to Jets general manager Darren Mougey, it is expected that the team will exercise the fifth-year options for Sauce Gardner, Garrett Wilson, and Jermaine Johnson.

The Jets selected all three players in the first round of the 2022 NFL Draft, meaning the Jets now have to make a decision on whether to pick up their option for the 2026 season. The Jets have until May 1 to officially pick the option up.

“We have time to make that decision,” Mougey said. “But I do anticipate exercising those fifth-year options on those players.”

The option for Gardner means he’ll get a guaranteed salary of $20.1 million in 2026. Wilson will get a salary of $16.8 million guaranteed. Johnson gets $13.4 million guaranteed.

The expectation is the Jets will have discussions with Gardner and Wilson about long-term extensions. Johnson, who tore his Achilles in Week 2 last year, likely needs to show more this season to get an extension.

Mougey said any extension talks will come after this week’s NFL draft.

“I’m going to get through the draft,” Mougey said. “But in terms of contracts and extensions on any players, I’ll always keep that in house. And what we’ll do, we’ll keep those dealings in those discussions in-house.”
