YONKERS — Delta Airlines is taking action after a woman in Yonkers found herself stranded at home due to damage inflicted on her specialized wheelchair during a recent flight.
Latavia Sturdivant’s routine journey turned into a distressing ordeal when her wheelchair was reportedly harmed by Delta’s handling. The incident has left her unable to leave her house.
Notably crowned as Ms. Wheelchair America 2026, Sturdivant was returning from an event when the damage occurred, hindering her ability to continue her advocacy work.
“This chair is irreplaceable for me, as it maintains my body alignment and prevents muscle contractions. Delta needs to improve how they handle our wheelchairs,” Sturdivant expressed.
“There is no other chair that I can use because it keeps my body in proper alignment, prevents me from having contractions and so Delta needs to do better in taking proper care of our wheelchairs,” Sturdivant said.
In a statement, Delta said, “Delta understands the fundamental impact that any damaged mobility aid has on an individual and their daily life. We sincerely apologize for this customer’s experience that did not live up to our standards, and we are in touch with them to ensure we make things right.”
Delta officials said it will cover the cost of her wheelchair repairs in full.
