Florida to Reignite Efforts for Medicaid Expansion Campaign

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WFLA) — In a renewed push to widen healthcare access, Florida Decides Healthcare revealed on Sunday their plans to relaunch a campaign aimed at getting Medicaid expansion on the ballot, potentially benefiting millions across the state.

The organization announced that it will commence collecting signatures starting February 1st, with the goal of featuring this initiative on the 2028 ballot.

This renewed effort comes in the wake of significant disruptions caused by HB 1205, a recent law that has introduced additional hurdles for citizen-driven ballot initiatives.

Amidst an ongoing national healthcare crisis, the group highlights that cuts to Affordable Care Act subsidies have forced many Floridians to lose their health insurance, with some experiencing a doubling or tripling of their premiums.

According to Florida Decides Healthcare, there is a looming risk that one in five residents in Florida may find themselves without insurance within the coming year.

“This campaign has always been about giving Florida voters a choice,” said Mitch Emerson, executive director of Florida Decides Healthcare. “Floridians overwhelmingly support Medicaid expansion, and starting February 1, we’re getting back to work in communities across the state to make sure their voices are heard.”

Florida voters are encouraged to request a petition by mail to participate.
