Democratic senator blames TRUMP for Brown University shooting

Senator Chris Murphy, a Democrat, has pointed fingers at President Donald Trump, holding him accountable for the tragic shooting incident at Brown University.

The Connecticut senator joined CNN’s Dana Bash on Sunday morning to talk about the previous night’s shooting, which resulted in the deaths of two students and injuries to nine others on the Rhode Island campus.

Authorities detained an unidentified male person of interest around 3 a.m. on Sunday at the Hampton Inn in Coventry.

As more details about the deadly mass shooting emerged, Murphy and Bash delved into the topic of gun legislation, with the journalist highlighting that Rhode Island is known for its stringent gun laws.

Murphy expressed his belief that enforcing stronger laws can lead to a reduction in gun violence, placing the onus on the president for what he describes as a ‘rise in violence’ across the United States.

Speaking on the latest shooting, Murphy said: ‘Gun violence rates and mass shooting rates have come down in this country, but this is not shocking because over the last year President Trump has been engaged in a dizzying campaign to increase violence in this country.

‘He is restoring gun rights to felons and people who have lost their ability to buy guns, he eliminated the White House office of gun violence protection and he stopped funding mental health grants and community anti-gun violence grants that Republicans and Democrats supported in that 2002 bill.’

Murphy added of the president: ‘So he has been engaged in a pretty deliberate campaign to try to make violence more likely in this country and I think you’re unfortunately going to see the results of that on the streets of America.

Even Bash, a harsh critic of Trump, was left speechless by the senator’s comments.

She asked him: ‘That’s a pretty big statement – he’s in a campaign to make violence more likely?’

Without hesitation Murphy replied: ‘Of course!’

People quickly hit back at Murphy over his bold comments, as one wrote on X: ‘Chris Murphy is lying on tv…what a scumbag..’

‘Chris Murphy never lets a good tragedy go to waste. Insufferable t***,’ another commented.

‘Crying Chris Murphy runs from camera to camera and never accomplished anything,’ someone else posted.

Another called his comments ‘garbage rhetoric and a ‘baseless smear.’

‘Trump has always supported law and order and enforcing existing gun laws, not increasing violence,’ a user wrote.

The Daily Mail contacted the White House for comment on Murphy’s claims.

Murphy has made gun control laws a main legislative priority following the devastating Sandy Hook school shooting in Connecticut that claimed the lives of 26 people in 2012.

Of the victims, 20 were children between the ages of six and seven-years-old.

The fatal massacre occurred in Murphy’s district while he representing as a US Representative.

On Sunday morning, Providence Police Chief Col. Oscar Perez confirmed the man taken into custody is in his 30s.

He did specify if the man is connected to Ivy League and did not state he was a suspect.

The shooter, who was armed with a handgun, fired more than 40 9mm rounds, law enforcement officials said.

A gun has yet to be recovered as of Sunday morning, but police did find two loaded 30-round magazines, an official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, told the Associated Press.

The first 911 call reporting shots fired at Brown’s prestigious engineering building was made at 4.05pm on Saturday afternoon, in the midst of students’ end of semester exam season.

Late on Saturday night, police released a short clip of a person of interest walking as he turns the corner on Waterman Street.

The same man in the video – wearing a full black outfit – was detained amid a flurry of police activity around 3am at the hotel, CNN reports.

Smiley confirmed that there were nine people injured and two fatalities in the mass shooting, and that tips from the local community were crucial with making the arrest in the early hours of the morning.

Smiley gave an update on the injured – confirming that seven are in stable condition, one is in critical but stable condition, and one has been discharged from hospital.
