Denny’s Closure in Southern California Sparks Outcry in Beach Community

After close to sixty years of serving the community, a cherished Denny’s located in San Diego’s Point Loma area has shut its doors for good, leaving patrons lamenting the loss of a cherished local landmark.

The closure caught the neighborhood by surprise. Regulars who visited the diner at the corner of Rosecrans and Jarvis Street last week found it unexpectedly closed, with locks on the doors and signs announcing its closure.

“It’s been around as long as I have,” remarked Ed Baier, a longtime resident who shared his thoughts with CBS 8. He described the Denny’s, which had been welcoming guests since 1966, as a vital community hub that connected multiple generations.

For many locals, this marks the end of a long era filled with memories.

“I’m really disappointed,” said Kate Yamashiro to the station, recounting how her high school softball team often gathered there. “I have fond memories here, and it’s really sad to see it go.”

“It’s not about the food, it’s the memories,” another commented on Facebook. “It’s tradition for our high school marching band kids to meet there for breakfast before their tournaments.”

The writing had been on the wall for a couple of months though. The half-acre lot had quietly been up for lease since April, according to real estate brochures. Realtors are actively looking for another restaurant to move in to the space now.

While the Rosecrans location is gone, diners looking for a Grand Slam are being redirected to visit a nearby Denny’s on West Point Loma Boulevard, which remains open.

The closure comes as Denny’s is trimming its national footprint. The chain previously announced plans to shutter up to 150 under performing locations in an effort to improve profitability.
