DENVER (KDVR) The Denver Police Department in Colorado is giving away free AirTags to help prevent car thefts and to catch thieves quicker.

The Colorado Auto Theft Prevention Authority is partnering with Denver police to provide a total of 450 free AirTag and SmartTag Bluetooth location tracking devices to Denver residents who register for the DenverTrack auto theft prevention program.

Starting at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, Denver drivers can sign up for a time slot for an in-person DenverTrack registration and tracker giveaway through the Denver Police Department’s auto theft prevention website, under the “DenverTrack Registration Events” tab.

Those who receive a time-specific registration confirmation can attend the event hosted at each of DPD’s six district stations from March 19-21 from 6-8 p.m. Registered drivers must bring their vehicle registration and cell phone to the scheduled appointment.

The DenverTrack program launched in 2023. When car owners register for the program, they preauthorize the Denver Police Department to work with GPS information when a vehicle is reported stolen.

According to Denver police, officers are not able to access GPS or tracking systems directly. If a registered owner’s car is stolen, they can provide the location of their vehicle to responding officers by contacting their GPS service provider or accessing their Bluetooth tracker app to share that location in real time with officers.

Police said, in certain situations, officers may work with victims to get verbal consent for their tracking service to give real-time updates to officers.
