Denver wants to pay airport staff to avoid FAA flight cuts

(The Hill) On Thursday, Denver Mayor Mike Johnston unveiled a plan to compensate air traffic controllers during the government shutdown, as they face missed paychecks.

According to Politico, Johnston’s initiative requires approval from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). Denver has requested a special exemption to fund air traffic controllers at the city’s international airport, though a response is still pending.

The Hill sought comments from both Johnston’s office and the FAA. An automated reply from the FAA’s press team indicated it isn’t currently handling media requests, but included a statement from Secretary of Transportation Sean Duffy.
