DHS to impose $1K fee for migrants granted humanitarian parole

The Department of Homeland Security revealed on Thursday its plan to introduce a $1,000 fee for migrants granted parole in the United States. This measure aims to enhance accountability and curb widespread abuse of the parole system.

The agency emphasized in a press release that this fee is intended to bolster oversight of the immigration parole framework and discourage its exploitation.

“The Biden Administration has misused America’s immigration processes, transforming parole into an unofficial amnesty initiative, which has allowed countless unvetted individuals to enter the U.S. unchecked, posing challenges for all Americans,” stated DHS Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin.

McLaughlin further explained, “By instituting this fee, President Trump and Secretary Noem are ensuring that foreign nationals who wish to remain in the country are committed and do not take advantage of the system. This notice regarding the immigration parole fee serves as an additional measure to prevent the erosion of our immigration system and to reestablish order and legality in our nation.”

The fees are triggered once the grant is effective, not when a parole request is filed or a travel document is received.

The $1,000 parole fee may be adjusted annually based on the Consumer Price Index. DHS said it will publish an annual notice in the Federal Register to announce any adjusted fees.

The money will be collected by Customs and Border Protection, Immigration and Customs Enforcement and Citizenship and Immigration Services.

The move comes as the Trump administration continues its efforts to mass deport illegal migrants and reduce pathways for legal immigration, including the president’s attempt to raise the fee for H-1B visa applications to $100,000 to prioritize American workers, which prompted a lawsuit from the U.S. Chamber of Commerce.
