Everything is not what it seems.
The finale of the second season of Wizards Beyond Waverly Place left fans stunned as it was unveiled that Alex Russo (Selena Gomez) is actually the mother of Billie (Janice LeAnn Brown), a young, powerful wizard she previously asked her elder brother, Justin Russo (David Henrie), to guide during Season 1.
When Billie is taken by her paternal grandfather, Lord Morsus, we discover that long ago, Alex performed a spell to wipe everyone’s memory of Billie to shield her from her malevolent grandfather. With the reopening of a portal between the human world and the dark magical realm, everyone’s memories come back. In a bid to save Billie and her family, Alex heroically flings herself and Lord Morsus into the portal.
So, does that mean Alex Russo is dead? The internet might think so, but we have some other theories. Keep reading.
Is Selena Gomez’s Alex Russo dead?
Really, it’s uncertain. Alex does make a grand sacrifice in the Season 2 finale, yet Justin reassures Billie that they’ll eventually locate her, no matter where she is. Suggestions from online chatter that Alex is gone forever might be hasty. Remember, Gomez shared that she returned to the role of Alex partly for her younger sister, and it would be unthinkable to disappoint Gracie by eliminating such a significant character! It’s a Disney production, after all.
Still not convinced? After claims of Alex’s death began surfacing online, Henrie took to X (formerly known as Twitter), to write, “Just so you know, Alex Russo is tougher than you think – and there’s a lot more to come. You’re asking all the right questions. Stay tuned, #WizardsBeyond has got some magical surprises up our sleeves.”
Therefore, I’m going to go with the assumption that Alex is not dead. But only time will tell. Here’s hoping Disney+ gets Season 3 to us ASAP!
Is Alex Russo a mom?
Yes, Alex Russo is Billie’s mother. As we learn in the final moments of Wizards Beyond Waverly Place Season 2, the mysterious Damien Penwolf (son of Lord Morsus) used to be evil until he fell in love with Alex, betrayed his father, and they had Billie together. While we don’t know much more about Damien, Henrie—who executive produces the series alongside Gomez—is looking forward to diving more into Alex’s past in future seasons.
“For this next season, we get to explore, who’s her husband? Where is he? Wait, she got married. What’s going on?” Henrie told Decider in a recent interview. “We allude to this love story that happened back in the day. Except now they’ve forgotten each other. So there’s going to be a lot to explore in the third season.”
