In “Zootopia 2,” audiences will reunite with the dynamic duo of Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde, the bunny and fox pair whose partnership is still a work in progress as they navigate their roles as rookie police officers.
However, when it comes to the film’s directors, Jared Bush and Byron Howard, their collaboration is anything but unlikely. The two are at the helm of this eagerly anticipated Disney animated adventure, and their teamwork is a natural fit.
“We often joke that together we make one whole smart person,” quipped Bush, adding a touch of humor to the discussion about their working relationship.
Howard chimed in, “Exactly, it’s like left brain meets right brain. Truthfully, our partnership works so well because we have mutual trust and share a similar sense of humor and storytelling vision.”
Under the leadership of Bush, who also serves as the chief creative officer at Walt Disney Animation Studios, and Howard, a large team is hard at work on the film. This time, Nick, voiced by Jason Bateman, and Judy, brought to life by Ginnifer Goodwin, are on a thrilling mission to track down a mysterious pit viper named Gary De’Snake, voiced by Ke Huy Quan.
“The fun thing about this world is it really does feel like a believable real place,” Bush told On The Red Carpet. “Something we really enjoyed was the idea that you can tell endless amounts of stories and they would all be compelling for different reasons.”
“The comedy I think is a big part of why the first movie worked,” added Howard. “And so I think we really wanted to be true to that. At the same time, we want people to get all the feels, like that’s what we want. I get the most emotional in my life when I go to the movies and I see characters feeling something.”
The first “Zootopia” won the Oscar for “Best Animated Feature” in 2017.
The sequel, “Zootopia 2” opens only in theaters Nov. 26.
