In a bold move, President Donald Trump is embarking on the construction of a magnificent ballroom adjacent to the White House, initiating with the East Wing’s partial demolition this week. This project adds to a long history of presidential modifications to the iconic residence.
From Theodore Roosevelt to Barack Obama, many presidents have personalized sections of the White House. Notably, Harry Truman undertook a significant modernization of the historic building, originally erected in 1792.
As the White House Historical Association highlighted this week, “The South Portico, the North Portico, the East Wing, the West Wing, and the Truman Balcony all sparked debate in their time, yet today, these features are integral to our vision of the White House.”
