Last season was a challenging one for the Mets, leaving fans and analysts scrutinizing the dynamics within the team. Despite their staggering $340 million payroll, the Mets found themselves missing the playoffs, leading many to question the cohesion within the clubhouse.
This year, observers are keenly watching for any signs of either unity or discord among the players. One hopeful indication of camaraderie is the budding relationship between Juan Soto and Carson Benge. The pair’s lockers are situated together in a corner of the Citi Field clubhouse, a proximity that seems to have fostered a close bond.
The two players have developed several handshakes, though they admit they’re still perfecting them. “We’re trying to figure out the best one,” Soto mentioned. Their connection was on full display when Benge hit his first major league home run. Instead of a simple handshake, Soto greeted him with an enthusiastic hug at the end of the dugout high-five line.
Throughout spring training, Benge felt supported by Soto, as if he had been taken under his wing. Now, as the season progresses, Benge is transitioning from being seen as a prospect to a full-fledged major leaguer, determined to contribute to the Mets’ success.
