Beyond the Vines: Experience Sonoma County's authentic taste of Louisiana

HEALDSBURG, Calif. — Sitting right off the roundabout in Central Healdsburg, you’ll discover a century-old, bright yellow house. It’s actually a quaint and inviting restaurant offering an authentic taste of Louisiana cuisine right in the heart of Wine Country.

“As authentic as it gets,” regular customer and Louisiana native Bradley Blanchard said.

“It is comfort food, whether it’s spice or whether it’s just, you know, a lot of flavor. That’s what Louisiana foods are all about. And they certainly do that they do that here,” owner of Flambeaux Wines Art Murray shares.

Gareth and Lynette Owens, who purchased the restaurant in 2021, wanted to create a welcoming space with unforgettable food.

“It feels like you’re walking into your mama’s house or your grandma’s house,” Blanchard said. “Best New Orleans restaurant this side of Mississippi, that’s for sure.”

One of their most popular dishes is the Surf and Turf Po’ Boy.

“We’re starting with our bread, which is custom-made by our local bread maker, Costeaux, for us,” Owens said. “It’s not a type of bread that you’re going to be able to find anywhere else. It’s very specific to New Orleans, and that’s very important to us.”

“Slow-roasted beef covered in its own gravy, fresh Gulf fried shrimp,” Blanchard said. “It’s absolutely delicious.”

One of the brunch favorites is the decadent Bananas Foster Pain Perdu, a sweet twist on French Toast.

“Its done on Poboy bread, which is really what you’re supposed to do,” Murray said.

“And they cover it in syrup, candied pecans, some bourbon, very, very decadent,” Blanchard said. “It’s dessert for breakfast.”

But the one classic dish that still amazes guests is the made-from-scratch, powdered sugar-coated beignets.

“I’m not just saying this. I’m from New Orleans. They’re the best beignets, period,” Murray said.

For Owens, one of his greatest rewards is providing his guests with great food and an unforgettable experience.

“Every guest that walks in this building feels like they’re walking into our home,” Owens said. “Come in and enjoy authentic cuisine that comes from the heart, that comes from my family, something that is incredibly special to us. And we hope to continue to provide for our community in that way.”
