PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) – New developments in a major Oregon mystery with sources confirming that a diver has found remains in a car believed to belong to the Martin family.
Father Ken, mother Barbara and three daughters Virginia, Sue and Barbie, disappeared in December 1958 while taking a drive up the Gorge.
Last March, local affiliate KOIN 6 News broke the story on the discovery of a vehicle in the waters of Cascade Locks matching Martin’s car, but when a crane lifted it, the chassis broke off and left most of the car buried in silt and mud.
Diver Archer Mayo, who discovered the car, has been working all summer to look through the remaining wreckage.
Sources say he recovered at least three different sets of remains, which are being examined by state forensic experts.
The Hood River County Sheriff’s Office isn’t saying much right now, only that the case remains under investigation. KOIN 6 could learn more early next week.
