LOS ANGELES — The enigmatic Maul is back in a newly animated series, sporting a revamped appearance and a perilous agenda.
In the series titled “Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord,” the beloved villain emerges with a bold ambition: to restore his criminal empire on a secluded planet, far from the clutches of the Empire.
Taking place after “Star Wars: The Clone Wars,” this series delves into Maul’s clandestine ascent to power, offering fans a deeper exploration of his journey.
Lucasfilm Animation has innovated its artistic approach for this series, merging traditional cinematic techniques with a unique brushstroke-on-glass style, imbuing the narrative with a more intense atmosphere.
The teaser hints at a universe brimming with excitement, featuring scenes of lightsaber duels, Force-sensitive characters, bounty hunters, and even a fleeting look at the Mandalorians.
It also hints at the return of a villain last seen in “Star Wars: Tales of the Jedi” who went up against Ahsoka Tano.
Another character, Marrok, first seen in the Disney+ series “Ahsoka,” also makes a return, joining the fray alongside Maul.
The footage closes with Maul unleashing a deadly lightsaber move as the unmistakable notes of “Duel of the Fates” echo in the background.
Sam Witwer returns to voice Maul, joined by Gideon Adlon as Devon Izara, Oscar nominee Wagner Moura as Brander Lawson, Richard Ayoade as Two-Boots and Steve Blum as Icarus.
On The Red Carpet spoke with Witwer at Star Wars Celebration Japan, where he teased what fans can expect from the series and reflected on portraying Maul for more than 15 years.
The first two episodes premiere April 6 on Disney+, with weekly releases and the final two debuting May 4 — the ultimate Star Wars holiday.
The Walt Disney Company is the parent company of Lucasfilm, Disney+ and this ABC station.
