Disney's lavish addition to its new cruise ship sparks fierce debate

For years, Disney has been commended for its creative use of cutting-edge technology and immersive experiences at its global resorts and theme parks.

However, the company’s latest plans have ignited a storm of criticism from those who believe they may have crossed a line.

Disney recently announced that its forthcoming cruise ship, the Disney Adventure, will feature three “brand new, supercharged” attractions.

This week, Disney released a behind-the-scenes video showing the construction of one of these attractions, the Groot Galaxy Spin, offering a sneak peek into the process.

The footage has sparked a lively debate among social media users. While some are thrilled by the prospect of enjoying theme park rides at sea, others remain unimpressed.

‘Hot take: we do not need attractions on cruise ships. Waterslides? Sure,’ one person wrote on X, formerly Twitter.

‘I agree 100 percent – waterslides are great! [But] I don’t want rides on cruise ships,’ agreed someone else.

‘The reason I love Disney Cruise Line is that it’s the opposite of Royal Caribbean. Royal has way too much going on,’ another person added.

‘I want relaxation with some nice pools, movies on funnel vision, great theater shows, and tasty food. And in between all that you can find me in the [spa].’

‘This looks like a nightmare,’ raged a different user. ‘It’s a round ride you’d see at a mall. Keep the rides in the parks!’

Others, however, defended Disney’s decision to add rides to its ship.

‘I’d argue the opposite, not everyone wants to get wet or doesn’t enjoy the feeling of being covered in water so things like this are perfect,’ one person chimed in.

‘Very much disagree. Not every ship needs them, but why not have the options,’ said another.

‘I’ve said in the past that I have zero interest in going on a cruise, but this makes me reconsider – and I’m sure I’m not the only one,’ announced someone else.

‘Hell yes we need rides on ships! Especially a Disney ship! This looks awesome,’ read a fourth positive reply.

The ride will be themed like Marvel’s Guardians Of The Galaxy movies and will allow passengers to ‘soar to bold new heights.’

But the footage led to a debate between social media users - while some people were extremely excited by the idea of being able to enjoy rides at sea, others were not amused

The Disney Adventure, which is set to enter service in March 2026, will also feature the first-ever rollercoaster aboard a Disney ship, called Ironcycle Test Run.

‘It’s also the longest rollercoaster at sea – spanning over 820 feet,’ reads its website.

The last attraction is called Pym Quantum Racers and will allow guests to ‘jump into a comically supersized toy car and zip around a full-scale toy track inspired by the iconic car chase scene in Marvel Studios Ant-Man and the Wasp.’

The ship will also offer ‘dazzling Broadway-style shows, upbeat deck parties, movie screenings and unforgettable meet and greets with favorite pals from Disney, Pixar and Marvel.’

It is set to have seven themed areas including Disney Imagination Garden, Disney Discovery Reef, Toy Story Place, Marvel Landing, Wayfinder Bay, San Fransokyo Street and Town Square.

Cruises will depart from Singapore and span either three or four nights, starting at $1,060.

The latest debate comes just weeks after Disney fans were left heartbroken after a longstanding landmark of over 35 years was demolished overnight.

The Hollywood Studios’ archway has been towering over the park since it first opened as MGM Studios in 1989.

Throughout all the changes that the park has endured – including when it became Hollywood Studios in 2008 – the archway has stood tall.

But guests were shocked to find that the massive statue had disappeared without a trace during the night last month.

The X account Bioreconstruct shared images of the empty spot where it used to be, and immediately, fans of the Most Magical Place on Earth took to the replies to share their shock and devastation, with some branding it as the ‘end of an era’.

The change seems to be part of the upcoming new experience, called The Magic of Disney Animation, which will be replacing the Star Wars: Launch Bay in Hollywood Studios.

In a press release, Disney described it as ‘a place where kids and kids at heart can laugh, draw, dream, and explore animated new experiences’ and vowed that it will ‘bring the wonder of animation to life like never before’.
