Diver Perishes During Recovery Mission for Tourists in Maldives Scuba Incident

A tragic development has emerged from the Maldives, where a local diver has reportedly died while participating in the search for five Italian tourists who perished during a scuba trip earlier this week.

The diver, Sergeant Major Mohamed Mahudhee, became ill on the third day of recovery efforts in Vaavu Atoll, as reported by The Sun, referencing a post from the Maldivian military on the X platform.

Mahudhee was swiftly transported to a hospital, but he sadly succumbed to his condition.

“His bravery, sacrifice, and dedication to our nation will always be cherished. We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family and fellow service members,” the military reportedly conveyed, according to the news outlet.

Mahudhee was part of an eight-member diving team involved in the mission to locate the remains of Monica Montefalcone, a marine biology professor from the University of Genoa, and her 20-year-old daughter, Giorgia Sommacal, who went missing during their dive last Thursday.

Muriel Oddenino of Turin, Gianluca Benedetti of Padua, and Federico Gualtieri of Borgomanero also failed to resurface from the 160-foot dive into an underwater cave.

This is a developing story. Please check back for updates.
