A dog named Elvis, who was the only pup left in the shelter after an adoption event,  finally found his forever home with an owner who happened to have once worked as an Elvis Presley impersonator. 

The grey and white spotted American bulldog was the one dog out of 61 pets who did not get adopted at the Chicago animal shelter Anti-Cruelty Society’s ‘Fall in Love’ adoption event last weekend.

Since then, Elvis’s picture has been circulating social media by hundreds in hopes of finding his forever home – with 76 news stations across the country sharing his story. 

The shelter announced the good news Friday on Facebook, saying: ‘His adopters had been waiting for the right time to welcome a dog into their family, and once they saw Elvis on the news, they couldn’t deny that it was fate.’

‘Loren is a dedicated ACS supporter and has hosted many of ACS’s fundraising events as Chicago’s fabulous drag queen, Debbie Fox! We couldn’t be happier for Elvis who finally got his happily ever after!’ the shelter added.

Loren’s partner, Drew said, ‘When no one else wanted him, we found him. We’re all a bunch of misfits.’ 

The shelter’s initial post following the adoption event sparked a wave of support in the comments. 

‘Elvis is the only dog that didn’t find a home during our Fall in Love adoption event. He met a lot of potential adopters but sadly did not get adopted,’ the post read.

The shelter urged the public to help in the quest to find Elvis, who they describe as a ‘3-year-old meatball that has the silliest personality and a giant that smile lights up every room he enters,’ a loving family. 

Elvis originally arrived at the shelter as a stray dog with a fracture of the pelvis that eventual healed with care. 

While Elvis’s fracture recovered, the shelter says he is prone to arthritis. 

That didn’t thwart the countless people fighting to adopt the pooch after his story came out.

After his story came out, hundreds expressed their support on social media, urging someone to adopt the sweet pooch

Hundreds expressed their support on social media, and urged someone to adopt the sweet pup.

‘He will be mine, I’m taking him home!’ one commented. 

Another wrote, ‘He looks like the best boy! Your people are coming, Elvis!’ 

‘He is absolutely adorable! How did he not get adopted! Shared and praying for the perfect forever home asap for this precious, handsome boy,’ another wrote. 

Those who followed Elvis’s journey were ecstatic to find out the news that he had found his home.  

‘Wonderful fit! Elvis you are going to be spoiled rotten it was meant to be!!!’ 

‘What a great story! The beginning of many great memories, I’m sure. Enjoy him!’

Animal shelters across the United States are struggling to cope with a massive influx of unwanted pets, forcing them to put 51,000 dogs to sleep in the first six months of this year.

While the pandemic saw a surge in people wanting to own a pet, the resumption of ordinary life for some sparked a reckoning.

Fewer animals were neutered during the pandemic, as veterinarians closed their offices – causing an increase in strays.

Rising inflation over the past year has squeezed household finances, making some pet owners unable to afford the upkeep of their animals, and forcing others to move into smaller homes.

The number of animals being handed over to shelters has reached a three-year high, but that has not been matched by an increase in people wanting new pets.

The result has been a 37 percent increase, year on year, in dogs being put down in shelters between January and July, according to new data first reported by Axios.
