Doja Cat recently opened up about her struggles with borderline personality disorder (BPD) while coming to the defense of fellow artist Chappell Roan in a TikTok video.
In the video shared on Friday, Doja Cat expressed, “From a young age, I’ve learned to feign happiness, to act like I enjoy things I don’t, and to give the impression that everything is fine.”
She continued, “I’ve managed to get through it, but it eventually caught up with me, as it often does with others. I am currently dealing with BPD.”
The 30-year-old “Paint the Town Red” singer revealed to her fans that she has been attending therapy “for years” to address the “agonizing condition” she’s likely been grappling with “probably forever.”
“I feel incredibly relieved and proud of how far I’ve come,” she shared, acknowledging that she still occasionally makes “mistakes.”
“But it is like an eight-year process of curing, of treatment, of healing, in order to cure it,” she explained.
Borderline personality disorder is a “mental health condition that affects the way people feel about themselves and others, making it hard to function in everyday life,” according to the Mayo Clinic.
“It includes a pattern of unstable, intense relationships, as well as impulsiveness and an unhealthy way of seeing themselves. Impulsiveness involves having extreme emotions and acting or doing things without thinking about them first.”
Elsewhere in her TikTok video, Doja showed her support for Roan as she praised the artist’s ability to “be uncomfortable, comfortably in front of people, and protect herself and be honest” as she faces scrutiny for her recent run-ins with paparazzi.
“I had to learn how to be honest,” Doja Cat told her followers.
“I had to learn how to be honest with myself. I lied to myself for years, for most of my life, and to see her sit there, and I love it.”
“I love that she can do that without hurting people,” she added. “She hasn’t hurt one person by being herself, and that shows that I can do the same.”
