A small aircraft unexpectedly crashed onto the southbound lanes of Interstate 95 in central Florida late Monday, causing a serious disruption.
Officials reported that the plane experienced dual engine failure before colliding with a vehicle, resulting in one individual being hospitalized.
“Out of nowhere, the plane’s front wheel hit the car, leading to a dramatic crash with sparks and debris flying everywhere,” recounted eyewitness James Coffey.
After the impact, the plane came to a halt against the median. Remarkably, the woman driving the Toyota Camry managed to escape from her vehicle unharmed.
Among the first responders were Pastor Bernard Wigley and his wife, Annie, who rushed to the site to offer assistance.
“It was so bad that it was the only place that she could have survived. If she had had other passengers, they would have all been smashed,” Wigley said.
Annie Wigley is a nurse and was able to quickly offer aid to the driver of the car.
“She was dazed at first. She didn’t even notice that notice the airplane that was right in front of the car what hit her, she thought a semi-truck hit her,” she said.
The woman was covered in broken glass and was treated for minor injuries.
The plane’s pilot and passenger, both 27 years old, were not injured, officials said.
Those on the ground said they are just thankful they were in the right place at the right time.
“Just a few seconds earlier or later with that airplane, it could have been a major, major catastrophe,” Wigley said.
