A recent policy update mandates the removal of any book detailing “sexual conduct” within five days of being contested.
DUVAL COUNTY, Fla. — Duval County Public Schools is set to implement adjustments to its book restriction policy, known as policy 4.30.
The school board approved these revisions on Monday night with a 5-2 vote.
According to the new guidelines, books that include descriptions of sexual behavior will be withdrawn within a five-day timeframe once they are challenged.
Before the board made its decision, parents and community members rallied outside the DCPS headquarters, voicing concerns that the policy broadens book bans and increases the school board’s influence over review committees.
The two board members who voted against revising the policy include Darryl Willie and Cindy Pearson. They said they did so to align with a federal judge who ruled in August that the new change to the policy is unconstitutional.
