Monday marked the grim milestone of the 40th motorcycle fatality this year in Duval County, occurring on Edgewood Avenue, a mere stone’s throw from the site of the previous incident.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Tragedy struck as a motorcyclist lost his life following a collision on Edgewood Avenue Monday evening, as reported by the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office.

According to the authorities, the victim, a man in his mid-30s, was heading north on a Kawasaki motorcycle at approximately 7:56 p.m. At the same time, a woman in her mid-60s was driving an SUV southbound and attempted a left turn onto 12th Street. This maneuver resulted in the front of the SUV colliding with the motorcycle.

The motorcyclist succumbed to his injuries at the scene, while the SUV’s driver and her passenger were transported to a nearby hospital, where they were said to be in “stable condition,” according to JSO.

As detectives continued their investigation, the road remained closed in both directions past 10 p.m.

This is the 40th motorcycle crash death in Duval County so far this year, according to JSO, far outnumbering the amount at this time last year.

Monday night’s crash happened on the same road, less than a minute away from the last deadly motorcycle crash in the county less than two weeks earlier. On Nov. 5, a motorcyclist was killed in a collision with an SUV making a left turn from Edgewood Avenue onto Commonwealth Avenue.

Following that incident, JSO said on social media that it was increasing traffic enforcement.

“Even one fatality is one too many. Speed is the number one factor in many of these deaths,” wrote the agency. “Motorcyclists, please slow down and ride carefully. Drivers, please keep your eyes on the road and be cautious around motorcyclists.

Motorcyclists are encouraged to give themselves extra space between cars and to make sure they’re easy to see; that means possibly wearing brighter gear, signaling early and turning your lights on. JSO also advises riders keep their eyes moving, scanning several seconds and blocks ahead to prepare for possible hazards or turning drivers.
