Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin will unveil fresh measures to tighten election security, responding to recent revelations that federal authorities discovered at least 278,000 noncitizens on US federal election voter rolls.
During an 11 a.m. news briefing, Mullin will discuss the Trump administration’s strategy for safeguarding American elections. This follows President Trump’s primetime address, where he spotlighted the inherent weaknesses within the US voting system.
“American leaders should only be chosen by American voters,” Mullin emphasized in his announcement on X, previewing the upcoming briefing. President Trump’s speech corroborated The Post’s investigation regarding the unlawful voter registrations, suggesting the actual figure might be significantly larger.
He further claimed, “Due to some states dominated by Democrats withholding their voter files, the real count is likely much more substantial. Still, our restricted analysis has uncovered over a quarter million foreign nationals improperly registered to vote.”
The staggering figure surfaces from a DHS report, which President Trump cited as evidence of the continuing vulnerabilities plaguing American elections.
Trump further ordered DHS “to notify every state about non-citizens on their voter rolls and direct them to remove all ineligible voters from the lists immediately.”
It is the highest-ever publicly reported in US history, but a source familiar with the information told The Post on Thursday it remains unclear how many of those registrants may have voted illegally.
Shortly after The Post first revealed on Thursday that DHS found 278,000 noncitizens on voter rolls, Fox News Digital reported that DHS had sent letters on Friday to officials in California, New Jersey, Nevada and Pennsylvania, alerting them to an estimated 256,000 noncitizens registered to vote in their states — the majority of whom were in the Golden State.
US law holds that it is illegal for non-citizens to vote in the United States, punishable by a year in jail and a fine — but ultimately states shoulder the burden to verify a voter’s eligibility.
The president used the information and other election-related revelations to help pitch action on the SAVE America Act — which would require proof of citizenship to vote and other election reforms, but has long lingered in Congress.
Republicans have repeatedly tried to jam the bill — considered Trump’s top legislative priority this year — through the Senate, but have consistently failed due to a Democratic filibuster.
Trump in his speech asked Americans to call on their lawmakers to pass the legislation.
It comes after the Department of Justice last week sent letters to elections officials across the country warning they “could be criminally prosecuted for aiding noncitizen voting” if such ballots are counted in an election.
The Illegal Immigration Reform and Immigrant Responsibility Act of 1996 was signed into law by Democratic former President Bill Clinton and criminalizes noncitizen voting.
