At approximately 9:15 a.m., the federal agent reached out to the Elgin Police Department to report the incident, which occurred on the 1600 block of West Highland Avenue. The agent informed authorities that the other party involved in the accident had fled towards Maple Lane, a nearby area.

Shortly after 10 a.m., Elgin police responded to another call reporting masked individuals on a property in the 1600 block of Maple Lane. These individuals claimed to have a warrant, and it was confirmed by local police that they were federal agents.

The ongoing operation was connected to immigration enforcement, as confirmed by Elgin police.

Around 12:22 p.m., Elgin police responded to multiple reports of shots fire in the 1600 block of Maple Lane, but determined no shots were fired. During the incident, federal agents “dispersed chemical irritants.”

ABC7 crews observed tense moments between the federal agents and protesters at the scene.

At least seven people were treated for exposure to the chemical irritants by Elgin police and fire first responders, local officials said.

“The Elgin Police Department will continue to respond to any calls for service and determine the appropriate action within the parameters of the Illinois Trust Act which prohibits Elgin officers from assisting with federal immigration enforcement operations,” a statement from Elgin police read in part.
